The 150-acre fire that broke out Saturday southwest of Custer was declared "controlled" Thursday afternoon by incident commander Jay Miller.

Rain and fog swept through the area Thursday. A fire engine was still on scene, looking for remaining hot spots. Patrols will continue off and on because fires can burn for weeks in old stump holes, coming to life on the next hot, windy day, according to Frank Carroll, spokesman for the Black Hills National Forest.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a person, and it is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Carroll at 673-9216 or their local law enforcement agency.

Miller asked the public to be careful with campfires, smoking, catalytic converters on vehicles and any other source of fire ignition during hot, dry forest and rangeland conditions.
