Firefighters planned to spend Tuesday night monitoring the site of a small wildland fire that escaped a brush pile burning on private land.
The Rushmore Ranch Fire burned about 2.9 acres of timber and grass Tuesday, 1 mile east of Rushmore Cave near Keystone. The fire was reported shortly after 1 p.m. and was declared contained about 3:30 p.m.
The state's Wildland Fire division reminds residents who may have burned brush piles within the past several weeks to check fire sites to make sure the fires are completely extinguished.
The Hayward Volunteer Fire Department, along with the state's Bear Mountain Handcrew and Type 6 engines and supervisors responded.
Mop-up operations will continue today.
