With prospects of electrical power outages continuing for possibly another week in some areas, relief groups are opening additional storm shelters in blizzard-struck areas.

Three shelters have opened on Rosebud Indian Reservation, American Red Cross officials in Rapid City said Tuesday.

A shelter in Todd County is designed to serve those with special needs. In Mellette County, two shelters have opened - in Parmelee, where 500 to 600 people may still need help, and in Norris, where officials anticipate another 150 to 200 need assistance. Those shelters will be serving meals only.

At least 20 volunteers from throughout the state and into Nebraska are making the trek to the remote areas of western South Dakota to help people in need.
