The Humane Society of the Black Hills is asking people to become members of an online pet owner networking Web site in order to give the shelter a shot at a makeover worth "up to" $1 million, volunteer coordinator Stephanie Hilt said in a news release.

The site zootoo.com is hosting the contest. People earn points for the shelter of their choice by registering and using the site. The 20 shelters with the most points by March 13 will be visited by the contest organizers, who will choose 10 finalists, all of whom win various cash prizes.

From April 4-24, the public can vote on which of the 10 sites should win the makeover.

As of Friday evening, Rapid City's shelter was ranked 11th out of hundreds of shelters.
