The state Department of Health is accepting applications from rural facilities for an incentive program that is aimed at helping them recruit health professionals.

State Health Secretary Doneen Hollingsworth in a news release said the program last year saw 60 health care professionals in nine fields sign agreements to serve in 32 counties.

The goal is to fill 60 available slots early, offering a $5,000 incentive to each participant, Hollingsworth said.

The payment is split between the state and the community served by the selected health care professional. The state funds half the bonus for towns over 2,500 population and 75 percent of the cost for smaller communities.

The local portion of the bonus can be awarded at any time, but the state withholds its payment until the person completes the two-year service agreement.

The program is for dietitians/nutritionists, nurses (LPN or RN), occupational therapists, physical therapists, paramedics, pharmacists and respiratory therapists. Certified medical technologists, medical laboratory technologists and radiologic technologists also are eligible.

Selection begins July 1 with up to two applications chosen per county until the 60 available slots are filled.

For information and application forms, call the Office of Rural Health, 1-800-738,2301, or go to www.RuralHealth.sd.gov.
