They have no toys, books, clothes or even their favorite stuffed animal. They only have the clothes on their backs.
They are the children of domestic violence.
Thanks to caring individuals in the community, now, when they flee with their mother to a safe haven, they have a comforting gift waiting for them: a backpack loaded with life's necessities, including toothpaste and a toothbrush, a hairbrush, soap, a change of clothes, shampoo, and a fleece blanket.
Depending on their age, they may receive a journal to write in, and if younger than 11, books, crayons, a teddy bear, coloring books, glue, and the toiletries.
Holly Gagne, a volunteer for Cases-For-Kids, said clothes and toiletries are big needs among the children.
The bag and the items may be small, but they are welcome, according to John Ligtenberg, executive director of Love INC, which recently took over the Cases-For-Kids project.
"It makes them feel more appreciated," Ligtenberg said. Instead of toting around a garbage bag with personal items, they have a duffel bag or backpack all their own.
Jefferson Academy had been running the Cases-For-Kids program, but wanted someone to take over the project and thought it was a good match for Love INC, Ligtenberg said.
Love INC has been helping people in the Black Hills for nearly 30 years. Currently there are 35 churches involved in volunteering with the organization.
"Our mission is to share the love of Christ in a very tangible way," Ligtenberg said.
Often times, women who are victims of domestic violence need a hand up, instead of a hand out, he said.
"They become self-sufficient and given hope that they can make it on their own," Ligtenberg said.
Organizations being helped by the program include Women Against Violence, Cornerstone Rescue Mission, and CASA.
In addition to the Cases-For-Kids program, women can learn life skills, such as how to balance a checkbook, and receive job training and parenting resources while receiving child care.
Donations can be mailed to: Love INC, P.O. Box 3255, Rapid City, SD 57709, with "Cases-For-Kids" in the memo area of a check or money order.
Ligtenberg emphasizes that any items donated to Cases-For-Kids must be new. The items can be taken to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Black Hills, 425 Kansas City St., Rapid City. Call Kathleen Green at 716-3871 before dropping off the items.
