Tribal colleges on the Standing Rock and Pine Ridge reservations are among 17 Native American schools receiving part of a $4 million federal grant.
Oglala Lakota College at Kyle and Sitting Bull College at Fort Yates, N.D., will each receive $272,350. OLC will use the funds toward building a Head Start program building at Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge reservation.
The funding from the Agriculture Department's Rural Development Tribal College Grant Program is to help schools buy equipment, build or renovate classrooms.
In all, 17 schools in eight states received grants. The 2008 farm bill extended the existing program authority for the Tribal College and University Essential Community Facilities program through 2012.
