SPEARFISH - The Visions of Sustainability speaker series
continues Tuesday through Friday at Black Hills State
University.
"If we are to live sustainably, we need to know what it would
look like," said Andy Johnson, director of the Center for the
Advancement of Math and Science Education at BHSU.
Johnson opened the series on Monday with a talk "Why
Sustainability? Why Now?"
- Tuesday, 3 p.m. Meier 202: Rosalie Little Thunder on "Lakota
Sustainability & Cultural Mapping."
- Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. Jonas 206: Josh Krueger of Hills
Horizon will talk about local efforts to improve the sustainability
of Spearfish and local communities, including recycling efforts,
Market in the Park, the push for a community garden and cob
buildings for low-energy use dwellings.
- Thursday, Sept. 24, 11 a.m. Jonas 206: Jerry Wright of Rapid
City's municipal recycling facility will talk about connections
between recycling and energy conservation.
- Thursday, Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m. Meier 204: Karl Schmidt of South
Dakota State University will speak on the Transition Movement, a
grass-roots movement that has the goal of shifting what it calls
the current unsustainable culture to one that is sustainable.
Schmidt has led sustainability-related study trips to Poland and
Brazil and has taught environmental history at SDSU.
- Friday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m. Meier 127: Schmidt will speak about
permaculture, which he says draws together landscape and people to
provide food, energy, shelter and other needs in sustainable
ways.
