Forty-two distinguished scholars in the top 5 percent of their graduating classes from Rapid City Central and Stevens high schools will be honored at the Evening of Excellence Academic Banquet Tuesday, April 22.
The banquet is at 6 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn.
In addition to featuring these seniors themselves, the students were given the opportunity to honor a teacher who made a difference in their education or lives.
The event is hosted by the Rapid City Public School Foundation, and is a major fundraiser for the foundation's grant program that supports Rapid City teachers and their classroom projects.
Nearly 400 people are expected to attend the event, according to Sharon Lee, director of the foundation.
"This year, there are quite a few elementary teachers, several middle school teachers, and, of course, the high school teachers. Many of the students credit those early classes for piquing their interest in math and science at a young age," Lee said.
Major sponsors for the event include Regional Health, US Bank and Black Hills Surgery Center. Tickets for $25 per person can be reserved at the foundation office, 348-1890.
