A 17-year-old male was taken to the hospital Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bike, according to the Rapid City Police Department.
The accident happened at about 6 p.m. at the 2400 block of West Main.
According to police, Amanda Konold, 21, of Rapid City was westbound on W. Main Street in the center turn lane while driving a 2001 Chrysler 300. She was making a left turn at the intersection of Piedmont Street at about 5 mph when her vehicle struck the 17-year-old, whose name is not being released at this time.
The teen had entered the intersection riding his BMX bicycle eastbound from the sidewalk, and said he had been traveling about 30 mph downhill. At the impact, he was thrown over the hood of the car and landed on the southeast corner of the intersection.
He was transported to Rapid City Regional hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his left leg, shoulder, arm and head. He was not wearing a bicycle helmet.
The investigation determined the bicyclist did not stop before entering the intersection from the sidewalk as required under South Dakota law. Alcohol was not a factor in this crash however the glare of the evening sun was a contributing factor for Konold, police said.
