An informational meeting for prospective players, coaches, referees and even fans of roller derby will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, March 14, at The Den bar at Camp Rapid.

The women-only Rushmore Rollerz league will be the first West River roller derby league and the second in South Dakota. After initial costs are covered, the league will donate its proceeds to charity. Sponsors are still needed for the teams.

The first match will be held June 21 in Rapid City.

Players will have to try out for the league, and will have to buy their own equipment.

Roller derby is a 5-on-5 competition held on a circular, flat track. A selected player from one team attempts to skate around the track as many times as possible while being protected by her teammates, while members of the opposing team try to thwart those attempts.
