International diplomatic discussions about treaties and the rights of indigenous people will be reviewed at a two-day meeting starting Monday in Rapid City.
Defenders of the Black Hills will host speakers Wes George of the Kakisiwew-Ochapowace Cree in Canada, and Sharon Venne, an attorney for the Dine in the Northwest Territories in Canada. Both are longtime participants in United Nations' programs involving indigenous issues and treaties, according to a news release from the group.
The free programs are open to the public, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Mother Butler Center, 221 Knollwood Drive. A noon meal will be provided.
Charmaine White Face, an Oglala active with the Defenders and the Teton Sioux Nation Treaty Council, will present information about the May meeting about the United Nations' permanent forum on indigenous issues.
