CRETE, Neb. -- Animal tracks on Crete's Doane College campus might have been left by a mountain lion, but a state official thinks they're more likely from a dog.
Doane officials e-mailed a warning to campus residents, telling them about a report from a Crete resident Thursday.
The resident says the mountain lion - also called a cougar, catamount or puma - was spotted on campus, and then it ran into a wooded area to the west.
A state Game and Parks Commission officer came to investigate but found nothing definitive in the tracks.
The commission's Jeff Hoffman said Friday it's possible a cougar was in the area. They've been spotted as far east as Omaha in the past few years.
But he saw a photo of the tracks and says they're more likely from a dog.
