Rapid City is one of America's 50 "next great adventure towns," according to National Geographic Adventure magazine.

"This year, we selected 50 innovative towns that aren't just prime relocation spots right now but smart choices for the future," according to the writers of the Sept. issue's article.

Rapid City ranked second on a list of 12 cities in the central United States, behind Grand Marais, Minn. Seattle sat atop the list of cities in the West, and Missoula, Mont., was ranked the top city in the Rockies. Boston took top honors for next great adventure city in the East.
