PINE RIDGE - The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council has decided not to impeach tribal President John Yellow Bird Steele and has dismissed all allegations against him.
A Black Hills treaty council had accused Yellow Bird Steele of meeting with an energy company to explore uranium mining on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Both the treaty and tribal councils have declared the reservation a nuclear-free zone.
A tribal official says a meeting was set up to discuss a water study on the reservation, and that's when the uranium rumors started.
Yellow Bird Steele is the second Oglala Sioux president in less than 2 years to face impeachment proceedings. Former tribal President Cecilia Fire Thunder was removed from office last year for saying she favored establishment of an abortion clinic on the reservation.
