PIERRE - An effort to enlighten taxpayers about state government spending in South Dakota has been turned aside by legislators in Pierre.
The Senate State Affairs Committee killed a bill that would have required the state to set up a Web site that provided information on all sorts of government spending.
Such things as salaries, how much state government spends on contracts for services and products, and amounts of money disbursed for various programs would have been listed on the Internet.
Rep. Hal Wick of Sioux Falls offered HB1233. He says taxpayers should be able to learn all those things by going to a single Web site.
