PIERRE - Heeding a warning from a state official that South Dakota is due to be sued if it denies people the right to put any messages they want on their license plates, a bill has been introduced to at least bolster the prohibitions.
Personalized plates are available for $25 extra per year on cars and trucks and an extra $20 for motorcycles.
State law now says license plate slogans may not be offensive to "good taste and decency."
SB185 is far more specific: no vulgar, profane, derogatory, obscene or racially offensive letters or numbers.
The bill is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in the Senate Transportation Committee.
