Larry married Lenice Beranek on May 16, 1953, at Amarillo, Texas, a union which produced three daughters and a life-long soul mate in Lenice. The two were rarely apart more than a day and remained devoted to each other until his death. He worked for State Farm Insurance as an Insurance Adjuster for 23 years, retiring in 1987. After retirement, Larry and Lenice purchased the Lazy J Campground and operated it for close to six years.
Larry was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, life member of the VFW, American Legion Post 311 of Piedmont, and past President of Piedmont Senior Citizens. He loved to cook and was very active in the Legion kitchen and Piedmont Senior Center kitchen in which he started the soup-sandwich Monday program. Prior to his illness he was in charge of American Legion Bingo. Larry loved traveling, gardening and camping. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Larry contracted West Nile Virus in 2003 and spent nine months at Rapid City Regional Hospital, most of it paralyzed and on a ventilator. When he was released in 2004, he wasn't expected to live much longer. But his love of family, determination and German stubbornness were underestimated. He not only lived but enjoyed his time as much as possible. From frying chicken to yardwork, he gave his best. More than once his wheelchair was cussed because it was stuck and there was no four wheel drive button. We will all miss his sense of humor, none more than his wife.
