CODY, Wyo. - The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody attracts some well-known people who require varying degrees of special handling when they visit.
Center spokesman Lee Haines said the staff and administration face a balancing act as they try to accommodate both the famous guest and other visitors.
"We want to recognize there will be public interest in these people, but also recognize that they're here on vacation," Haines told the Cody Enterprise. "While we understand they might like some privacy, we also have 1,500 other visitors coming in and can't close the doors.
"So we try and keep things monitored and allow them to visit without many distractions if that's what they want. It can be tough sometimes depending on who the person is."
Recent notable visitors to the center this year include the King and Queen of Norway, and Academy Award winning actor Robert Duvall. Other notable visitors in the past included John Wayne and his family, Clint Eastwood, Tom Selleck and Candice Bergen.
Haines said entertainers deal well with the attention they might garner, while others might not be so used to it.
"Robert Duvall was great because he's used to the attention, so he handled everything well," Haines said. "We try not to let it turn into an autograph session, but some of that certainly happens."
"Most come in the front door, but in rare occasions they might enter through a side door," Haines said.
He said that typically, famous visitors get a guided tour from the museum's executive director, Bruce Eldredge.
The historical center also tries to be sensitive to publicity surrounding its famous guests.
"The King and Queen wanted no media coverage, so we honored that request," Haines said.
