Saturday, Sept. 6, will be a day to celebrate Kevin Morsching's life.

Morsching died a year ago after a skateboard accident in Brookings.

Friends and family never really got a chance to do something in his memory. Saturday's planned run/walk starting at the Post 22 Floyd Fitzgerald Stadium parking lot will do just that.

"We were thinking about having a gathering at a local establishment where we could celebrate Kevin's life, but we decided that because he was a very athletic person, we should do this so more people could engage in it," Kevin's mom, Kim Morsching, said.

Kim Morsching's co-worker and friend, Cindy Cooke, has been spearheading the effort.

"When my son was injured, she was probably one of the first calls I made," Morsching said. "She, along with so many other people wanted to help out. They wanted to do something."

Kim Morsching wanted to do something, too. And she has.

"He was special," Morsching said about her son. "I knew a lot of people knew him, but we were floored at the outpouring. We were shocked at the circle of friends and the impact he had in his short 22 years."

Kim Morsching met another mom who lost her son and who shared the same sentiments.

"I got to thinking, 'Wouldn't it be good to have a Web site where friends could interact with one another and share what this person meant to them?'" she said.

Kim Morsching is working with Asio Studio in Rapid City to create the proposed site.

"I'd never lost anyone major in my life before, and nothing can stack up to the loss of a child," Kim Morsching said. "I really started thinking about the whole process of losing someone special. What is important is that people still remember them."

The Web site will be a place for people to come to remember their loved ones, she said. Among the features will be blogs and links to volunteer organizations.

Kevin Morsching, a 2004 St. Thomas More High School graduate, was a standout athlete. He was a pitcher for the Post 22 American Legion team. He played one season at Midland College in Texas before transferring to South Dakota State University.

Post 22 coach Dave Ploof said of Kevin: "He was one of the hardest-working kids we ever had in the Post 22 baseball program. There are givers and takers in the world, and he gave of himself. People will be a lot better off having known Kevin."

Kim Morsching said they hope the walk/run will become an annual event. Proceeds in subsequent years would go to fund programs Kevin Morsching held dear. His parents knew of their son's dreams through a goal-setting exercise he put down on paper in the spring of 2007 at SDSU.

"I have a real desire to fulfill his dreams," his mom said.
