ABERDEEN - Doctors in Sioux Falls treating Northern State University basketball coach Don Meyer have amputated his left leg below the knee.
It was severely injured Sept. 5 when his car collided with a semi.
Officials at the Aberdeen school said in a news release that Meyer has been in a lot of pain and feels a sense of relief after making the decision.
The Highway Patrol says he either fell asleep or was distracted when his car crossed the center line. None of the people in four other vehicles involved in the crash was hurt.
Meyer was diagnosed with cancer that might not have been found had he not been injured.
He is second on the NCAA's all-time victory list in men's basketball behind Bobby Knight.
