RAPID CITY - Sanmina-SCI has reportedly laid off more than 100 workers at its Rapid City electronics plant.

Company officials at Sanmina-SCI headquarters in San Jose, Calif., did not return phone calls Thursday. But former employees said the number of layoffs on Friday numbered more than 100.

It's not unusual for Sanmina-SCI to cut back its Rapid City work force to match the ebb and flow of contracts for electronics work. Over the years, the company has regularly laid off workers and called them back.

As recently as 2005, the company cut its work force by about 40 workers, bringing the total staff here to just over 600 workers. It's unclear how many people remain employed at the Rapid City plant after last week's layoffs.

Sanmina-SCI is a global contract manufacturer in the communications, defense and aerospace, industrial and medical instrumentation, computer technology and multimedia sectors. It builds electronics components and equipment for original equipment manufacturers, the military and other clients.

Sanmina-SCI has nearly 41,000 employees worldwide at plants in 20 countries including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, Singapore, Israel, Germany, France, Ireland, Spain, Hungary and Sweden.

The Rapid City plant has been though a number of changes since 1969, when it opened as a Control Data Corp. facility. In its Control Data heyday, the plant employed 1,800 workers in Rapid City.

In 1975, it became part of Magnetic Peripherals, a Control Data-Honeywell joint venture. In 1987, SCI Systems bought the facility and began turning it into a contract manufacturer. SCI merged with Sanmina Corp. in 2001.

Sanmina-SCI's stock has dropped in recent years. In early 2004, shares were trading for nearly $15 per share, but it's been below $5 since mid-2006. The stock closed Thursday at $2.14 per share.
