GILLETTE, Wyo. - A Gillette man accused of writing a threatening letter to federal judges and prosecutors over the seizure of his home has been charged with four federal counts of threatening to injure government agents and officials.
The government alleges that Laurence Eustelle Wolff sent the letter to federal judges William Downes and William C. Beaman as well as U.S. attorneys John R. Green and Carol Statkus.
In the August letter, the 59-year-old threatened a deadly standoff if authorities tried to seize his home over unpaid income taxes. Wolff didn't pay federal tax between 1988 and 1995 and owes $613,494 in back taxes, according to court records.
Police say nobody was injured when Wolff was arrested late last month.
Ernie Sell, a property appraisal and liquidation specialist for the Internal Revenue Service, said Wolff is being held without bond in Casper. He said Wolff's home will be auctioned by November.
John Powell, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Cheyenne, said Wyoming authorities have recused themselves from the case because two of the plaintiffs are federal prosecutors in Cheyenne. Authorities in Colorado are handling the case.
Information on whether Wolff has an attorney was not immediately available.
