Mount Rushmore extends lighting for 9/11 anniversary

Mount Rushmore National Memorial will extending the evening illumination of the sculpture through the evening Friday.

After the regular evening program that begins at 8 p.m., the carving will remain illuminated until sunrise Saturday, Sept. 12. A park ranger will be stationed on the Grand View Terrace throughout the night to answer visitors' questions.

Visitors are asked to park on the upper levels of the parking garage. The parking garage entrance gate will be open, and garage levels three and six will be available to park. All other National Park Service and concession facilities will be closed.

Rapid City firefighters to remember fallen colleagues

In honor of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, the Rapid City Fire Department will hold a small memorial ceremony Friday at 9:45 a.m. at the Main Fire Station at 10 Main St., Rapid City.
