A national report has given South Dakota above-average marks in preparing students for college, opportunities to attend college, and the number of undergraduate degrees earned by college students in the state.

However, the State Report Card on Higher Education says South Dakota still needs to find ways to improve college affordability. The state received an "F" in that category, along with 48 other states. Only California received a passing mark.

The report includes both public and private colleges and universities.

The State Report Card says the likelihood of enrolling in college in South Dakota by the age of 19 is high and has increased by 35 percent since the early 1990s.
