Two Sturgis residents were robbed at gunpoint and one of them was shot after two suspects burst into their Sturgis home about 9:30 p.m. Saturday night, according to the Sturgis police department.
The incident occurred at Mountain View Mobile Home Park, Lot 204, where Judd Blakeman, 20, was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound. William Canaday, 21, also received minor injuries during the incident, but was not shot.
James Blanding Jr., 20, and John Charles Root, 19, are suspected of the crimes and were arrested. They are currently in custody at the Meade County Jail.
The two were not at the Mountain View residence when officers arrived Saturday night, according to the police.
Sturgis Police Department officers notified Box Elder Police of the robbery and shooting and identified the suspects. The Box Elder police then began surveillance of a home in the 500 block of Line Road, where Root showed up with another individual.
According to the police, as officers made contact with him, he attempted to flee on foot and was captured outside. Inside the home, officers found the homeowner, two other adults, and one juvenile. While investigating, they recovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, two firearms, and ammunition. One of the firearms was a handgun believed to be involved in the Sturgis shooting.
Also arrested at the scene were John Lee Root, 55, Cody Busch, 21, Summer VanCleave, 23, all of Box Elder, and a juvenile female from Rapid City. They were arrested for various drug-related charges. Further investigation is pending.
Box Elder Chief of Police John Keegan asks that any citizen having information concerning these events to contact the Box Elder Police Department at 923-1401, or Sturgis Police Department at 347-2573.
