PIERRE - South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long says a program that keeps chronic drunken drivers from drinking has been wildly successful.

Long asked legislators Friday for $400,000 to buy more alcohol-detection bracelets.

That would be enough for 300 bracelets and would double the number being used across the state.

The request got unanimous support from the House Appropriations Committee, sending HB1067 to the full House.

Long says many of those in the 24/7 Sobriety Program are fitted with the electronic bracelets to ensure they do not drink.

Others must report to sheriffs' office twice daily for breath testing.
