PIERRE, S.D. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has set up a temporary office in Pierre to help manage the flood relief that's heading to South Dakota.
Last week, President Bush signed a disaster declaration for 27 South Dakota counties and three American Indian reservations that were flooded after an early June storm. It authorizes the federal government to provide financial assistance for up to 75 percent of the eligible damage to public infrastructure.
FEMA's Phil Wernisch says the field office in the Pierre Mall was opened on Friday, and satellite offices could be set up in Rapid City and Mitchell. Staff could be in the state for the next two months.
