Ali Nowotny, the Rapid City teenager at the Mayo Clinic in Rocheter, Minn., underwent brain surgery to remove a tumor Friday morning. She was doing well at around 2 p.m. CST as doctors wrapped up her surgery and closed the incision in her head, a nurse reported to family in the hospital's waiting room.
The tumor was removed and doctors planned to bring Ali back to consciousness in the operating room before taking her to recovery, where she will be able to see her father, the nurse and doctors said.
Ali went into surgery at 9 a.m. CST this morning. Her family got word at 11:50 a.m. CST that the surgeon had reached the tumor and begun work to remove it, and that Ali was doing well. Initially, doctors said the surgery could last three to four hours total.
At least seven family members including her father, grandmother and aunts are in Rochester to be with Ali as she recovers.
Check back this afternoon for updates on her progress.
