Crime rates for this year's rally are down compared to last year's numbers at this time, rally officials say.

Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin attributed the drop to lower attendance and said, so far, the number of people attending the rally are fewer than last year.

According to a news release from rally officials, 135 tickets have been written since Saturday morning with most of those being parking citations, and 15 people have been jailed. Sturgis Police Chief Jim Bush said that last year there were 168 tickets written and 32 people jailed during the same period.

"It seems that the crowd is spreading out to a larger area of the hills," Bush said.

Merwin also said a Texas man was arrested early Sunday at Glencoe CampResort for reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated assault.

At about 3:25 a.m. Sunday, the Meade County Sheriff's Office received a report of shots fired at Glencoe. David Gilbert, 53, of Lufkin, Texas, was arrested and is in the Meade County Jail. He will make his first court appearance this morning.
