A Wanblee man, Jason Wilcox, 38, died Monday after he was struck by a vehicle on a highway near Wanblee on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
He had stopped to give a woman walking with her children a ride, said his sister Phyllis Wilcox. She said he was outside of the car parked along the road when he was hit. He died at the scene.
"It's an unreal nightmare," she said. "My brother had a big heart, and he was always trying to help people."
Tribal accident investigators referred questions to federal authorities who could not be reached Thursday.
Funeral services for Wilcox are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Crazy Horse School in Wanblee.
