A second flu-related death has been reported in South Dakota, and the state Health Department says influenza is widespread.
The victim was a Sioux Falls resident in the 80 to 89 age group.
Officials said their most recent report as of last week showed 365 confirmed cases of flu and 146 hospitalizations.
South Dakota had six flu-related deaths in the 2006-07 flu season.
In Rapid City, a Rapid City Regional Health spokeswoman said Friday that in the past week, there has been an increase in the number of cases of influenza B, parainfluenza and respiratory syncytial virus.
Melissa Kent also said hospitals are still seeing influenza A cases, but the number has declined in the past week.
People can protect themselves by avoiding crowds and washing hands frequently.
Kent said people who are ill are asked not to visit others in hospitals, assisted living centers or nursing homes.
