A Black Hawk man was killed in a one-vehicle accident Monday evening after leading law enforcement on a chase near Custer.
A Wind Cave Park law enforcement officer tried to pull over Jack Earl Haun, 48, on U.S. Highway 385 about 7:26 p.m. Sunday for speeding and erratic driving, according to a news release from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
Haun refused to stop and led the officer on a chase at speeds of 60 mph to 65 mph, according to the release. About three miles south of Custer, Haun's vehicle went across the median and veered into the east ditch, went through a fence and hit a tree.
Haun, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, the release said.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office and Custer Ambulance responded.
