About a week after a Chadron State College student was arrested for allegedly stabbing his roommate to death, school officials are stepping up efforts to alert students to the dangers of illegal drug use.
Officials at the school said in a news release that they are encouraging students to destroy any illegal drugs in their possession.
"The message we're trying to send here is not new," Randy Rhine, CSC vice president of student services, said in the release. "Don't do drugs."
Police have charged CSC student Joseph Hotz, 25, on murder charges for the stabbing death of his roommate, Kenneth Pfeiffer, 22, of Sebastian, Fla. Although law enforcement officials haven't received official toxicology reports in the case, the Omaha World Herald reported earlier this week that an arrest affidavit filed in Dawes County Court indicated that Hotz told police that the two men had been using mushrooms and marijuana prior to the stabbing.
Authorities said that Pfeiffer had been stabbed more than 50 times.
Hotz, of Rushville, Neb., remains in Dawes County Jail in lieu of $5 million bond. In addition to being charged with first-degree murder, Hotz was also charged with attempted murder, three counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and one count of terrorist threats. The additional counts are related to Hotz allegedly breaking into a home and threatening the homeowner.
