SPEARFISH - Officials hope today to identify the victim of an early Sunday fire that also destroyed a Spearfish Valley home.
Spearfish Police Department spokesman Curt Jacobs said the autopsy would be conducted late today, possibly early Wednesday.
Police, firefighters and the South Dakota State Fire Marshal's office are collectively working on determining the cause of blaze.
Police were notified of the fire at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, and arriving firefighters found flames engulfing the home at 258 Evans Lane, northeast of downtown Spearfish.
The fire destroyed the home as crews also battled snow, wind and subzero cold.
The victim's body was found in the debris. A second person reported in the home was later found unharmed.
Remnants of the structure were still burning and smoldering Monday morning. Because of the subzero temperatures, fire crews still could not put water on the fire without freezing hoses.
Jacobs estimated that the post-fire investigation would likely take most of this week.
