DOT charts out biggest projects through 2012
It's called the STIP - the State Transportation Improvement Program - and it serves as the state Department of Transportation's roadmap for the next five years of road construction.
Each year, the list is updated, rearranged and extended for one more year. This year's STIP covers road-construction work from 2008 to 2012. Here are the biggest projects:
2008
* Butte County: Milling and resurfacing of 7.7 miles of U.S. Highway 212 between Belle Fourche and the Wyoming state line, $9.2 million.
* Fall River County: Grading, surfacing and other work along 1.2 miles of U.S. Highway 18 between Maverick Junction and Hot Springs, $7.4 million.
* Fall River County: Grading and structures such as culverts and bridges for two additional lanes of U.S. Highway 18-385 from Maverick Junction to Smithwick Road, $12.5 million. This is part of the Heartland Expressway project.
* Meade County: Reconstruction of 7.1 miles of Interstate 90 between Sturgis and Tilford, $13.5 million.
* Meade County: Resurfacing of S.D. Highway 34 between White Owl and the Ziebach County line, $4.3 million.
* Pennington County: A five-lane extension of East Anamosa Street between La Crosse and East North streets, $7.1 million.
* Pennington County: A five-lane extension of East Mall Drive from La Crosse Street to East North Street, $5.8 million.
* Perkins County: Grading, structures and blotter surfacing of 12 miles of S.D. Highway 20 between Prairie City and Bison, $8.8 million.
2009
* Fall River County: The next phase of the Heartland Expressway project calls for paving of new lanes and repaving of existing lanes on Highway 18 between Maverick Junction and Smithwick Road, $8.5 million.
* Meade County: Relocation and reconstruction of the I-90 service road between Exits 40 and 44, $5.3 million.
* Meade County: Reconstruction of eight bridges on I-90 in the Sturgis area, $12.4 million.
2010
* Butte County: Grading, bridge work, curb-and-gutter, streetlights and paving work on 1.1 miles of U.S. Highway 85 in Belle Fourche, including the National Street intersection, $6.4 million.
* Fall River County: This phase of the Heartland Expressway project calls for grading, interim surfacing and erosion-control work on 12.4 miles of U.S. Highway 385 between Oelrichs and the Nebraska state line, $13.2 million.
* Fall River County: Another Heartland Expressway project, this one calls for grading for two additional lanes along 9.8 miles of Highway 18-385 between Smithwick Road and Oelrichs, $10.8 million.
* Lawrence County: Reconstruction, resurfacing and other work on and around I-90's Exit 10 in Spearfish, $9.4 million.
* Meade and Perkins counties: Milling and surfacing of 24 miles of S.D. Highways 73 and 20 north of Faith, $5.5 million.
* Shannon County: Grading, bridges and other structures and interim surfacing of 16 miles of U.S. 18 between Oglala and Pine Ridge, $21 million.
2011
* Fall River County: A Heartland Expressway project, this one calls for paving of the new lanes on 9.8 miles Highway 18-385 between the Smithwick Road and Oelrichs, $9.4 million.
* Fall River County: Another Heartland Expressway project, this one includes paving of 12.9 miles of Highway 385 between Oelrichs and the Nebraska state line, $12.4 million.
* Jackson and Jones counties: Shoulder and drainage work along 12.2 miles of I-90 between the Jackson County line and Murdo, $5 million.
* Meade County: Frontage road reconstruction along 2.3 miles of I-90 between exits 44 and 46 near Piedmont, $4.2 million.
* Pennington County: Grading, storm sewers, curb-and-gutters, sidewalks, lighting and paving on 1.3 miles of Jackson Boulevard between Mountain View Road and Rapid Creek, $10.4 million.
* Shannon County: Paving and other work along 16.5 miles of Highway 18 and S.D. Highway 407 from Oglala to Pine Ridge and the Nebraska state line, $9.1 million.
2012
* Fall River County: Grading and blotter surfacing of 9.8 miles of S.D. Highway 71 north of the Nebraska state line, $6.4 million.
* Pennington County: Grading and paving of 3.5 miles of U.S. Highway 16B (Catron Boulevard) in Rapid City, $16.2 million.
