A scientific poll of likely South Dakota voters indicates that there is little chance Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin will be defeated Nov. 4 in her re-election bid.
The random telephone survey, conducted for Argus Leader Media and KELO-TV of Sioux Falls by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research, found Herseth Sandlin with a commanding 62 percent to 29 percent lead over Republican challenger Chris Lien of Rapid City.
The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Only 1 percent of poll participants did not know who Herseth Sandlin is, compared to 27 percent who said the same about Lien.
