Former Mayor Jim Shaw named manager of new SBA office

RAPID CITY - Former Rapid City mayor Jim Shaw will be the senior area manager of the new Alternate Work Site office that the U.S. Small Business Administration is opening in Rapid City.

The office will be at the West River Business Center on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

"I feel fortunate to be able to bring on board someone with Jim's background, experience and stature," John L. Brown II, SBA's South Dakota district director, said in a prepared release.

Shaw has a long history of involvement in regional economic development and is committed to expanding SBA's services in western South Dakota, Brown said.

Shaw will assist with SBA programs and services. His responsibilities will include an aggressive marketing and outreach program to communities, lenders, resource partners and small businesses throughout western South Dakota.

Shaw has served on the Rapid City Economic Development Partnership Board, the Governor's Task Force on State and Local Government Cooperation and developed and implemented the Rapid City Opportunity Capture Fund to administer $3.5 million in business attraction funds.

Shaw served two terms as mayor of Rapid City. He is a former journalist, news anchor and producer for KOTA-TV. He is a U.S. Army veteran, married and has one daughter.
