If you plan on fishing at Canyon Lake or to ride or walk the path around the lake, do it before Monday, or you will be waiting for three months.

According to a news release from the city, the shoreline and walking paths near the edge of Canyon Lake, from the spillway to the inlet on the north side, will be fenced off to restrict public access beginning Monday. Some fencing also will be erected near the boat and paddle-boat launch area at Rapid City's west-side recreation park.

Also, the lake will be drawn down by as much as 6 feet, and no wintertime fishing will be available.

The closures are part of a project to install a 30-inch diameter, 2,100-foot-long polythene pipe under the bottom of Canyon Lake. The project is expected to be finished by March 31.

When completed, the bypass pipe will allow Rapid Creek to be diverted through it when repair and maintenance are needed on the dam or lake, according to the news release. It also will allow Rapid Creek below Canyon Lake to be unaffected by future construction or sediment removal in the lake or lake basin.

The project is a cooperative effort between the city, the state Department of Game, Fish & Parks and Black Hills Fly Fishers.
