A judge denied a request to set bond Wednesday, March 5, for a Rapid City man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl.
Matthew Sullivan, 19, is charged with first-degree rape, which carries a maximum penalty life in prison.
He is accused of having sex with the girl in May.
Seventh Circuit Judge Merton B. Tice denied requests to set a bond, saying that when he trusted Sullivan to abide by bond conditions and entrusted Sullivan's father to see that Sullivan abided, that trust was broken.
Sullivan's attorney, Paul Winter said he and prosecutors need to discuss a possible plea agreement in the case.
Tice set a status hearing in the case for March 19.
Sullivan remains in custody at Pennington County Jail.
