RAPID CITY - The Rapid City Police Department is starting a new campaign to crack down on drunken driving.

Two police officers - Fred Baxter and Ryan Edwards - will now be dedicated to a DUI Task Force, according to a news release from the Rapid City Police Department. The officers' duties will be to identify and apprehend offenders driving under the influence.

The campaign will also include DUI checkpoints, DUI saturations and media events.

According to the release, 1,036 people have been arrested this year, 219 of whom were repeat offenders.

Epic Media has agreed to help with the effort and will feature electronic billboards throughout the town that will keep a running tally of DUI arrests in the region. The billboard will be updated daily with arrest numbers and will start at zero on Jan. 1.

The Rapid City Police Department hopes to work with other agencies to combat drinking and driving.
