An automatic sprinkler system prevented potential disaster Thursday afternoon when a grease fire broke out at a restaurant on Historic Main Street in Deadwood.

Authorities received a call about 2:30 p.m. Thursday of a possible structure fire on Main Street and the Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department was immediately paged. After arriving, Assistant Chief Bill Glover was able to determine that there was a grease fire in the kitchen at Miss Kitty's Chinatown. However, the automatic fire supression system had already deployed and extinguished the fire.

According to a news release from Glover, "Firefighters responding were very pleased to have this quipment do its job. A call on Main St. is always a heart stopper, but it was far less dramatic on Thursday."

There were no estimates on how much damage the fire did.
