Favorable weather conditions helped crews fully contain the Four Mile Fire in Custer State Park on Wednesday, according to a news release from the Northern Great Plains Information Center.

The fire was fully contained at 2,350 acres Wednesday afternoon.

Ground and air crews "attacked the fire aggressively" Wednesday by connecting hand lines and dozer lines, the release said.

A large section of Wildlife Loop Road Scenic Byway and a number of the park's nearby interior roadways were opened at noon, as was the French Creek Horse Camp, according to the news release.

"We had a great effort from the firefighters today," State Wildland Fire Coordinator Joe Lowe said in the prepared release. "Custer State Park offers a rich treasure of natural beauty, and the team is pleased to have protected the park's resources to the best of our ability."

The management team has re-evaluated its resource needs because of the success of fire suppression efforts and has released some fire crews and equipment from the fire for use in other areas.

The investigation into the fire, which officials believe was caused by arson, continues.

"It is unfortunate to have an incident get started by arson," Richard Miller, park superintendent, said. "The park staff is thankful that no one was hurt."

Park officials are grateful for the support and assistance from the various agencies and personnel fighting the fire, Miller said.

"What could have been a disastrous situation was mitigated through effective and efficient fire management," he said.

The cost of the Four Mile Fire is estimated at $1,096,600. The fire also delayed park visitors and was a nuisance for vacationers.

More than 500 firefighters, including staff from the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, state of South Dakota, Bureau of Indian Affairs and several volunteer fire departments, assisted with the fire.

The Wildlife Loop Road is now open from the east side near the State Game Lodge through Oak Draw Road.

Although French Creek Horse Camp has been reopened, horseback riding is prohibited south of CSP 4 - Lame Johnny Road.

Blue Bell Lodge is open, but with limited trail rides. For more information, contact the Lodge at 255-4531.

S.D. Highway 87 is open to traffic.

For detailed road closure information, contact the Custer State Park office at 255-4515.

With the Fourth of July approaching and predictions of more hot, dry weather, people are reminded to take care with their campfires.

Fireworks are not permitted within any state park or recreation area in South Dakota.
