State basketball: Red Cloud, Mitchell advance

RAPID CITY - Red Cloud erased a four-point halftime deficit with a 28-3 third-quarter run to defeat Chamberlain 69-47 in the first game of the Class A state boys basketball tournament in Sioux Falls.

With the score tied at 35 in the third quarter, Red Cloud went on a 20-0 game-deciding run in which the Crusaders out-rebounded the Cubs and took advantage of fast-break opportunities.

Lester Gotheridge led Red Cloud with 24 points, and David Giago scored 16. Joe Hieb led Chamberlain with 19 points, and Wade Hickey added 14.

Red Cloud will face Platte-Geddes, a 66-48 victor over Sioux Valley, at 6 p.m. MDT on Friday. Chamberlain will play Sioux Valley.

Platte-Geddes' Jordan Johnson scored 27 points in the win. Teammates Keith Cutler and Thad Campbell scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Class AA

Fourth-seed Mitchell edged Yankton 61-59 in the second game of the Class AA boys basketball tournament at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The Kernels advance to play Sioux Falls Lincoln, a 70-28 winner over Sturgis.

Division I recruit Colton Iverson of Yankton scored 36 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss. Randy Kiewel led Mitchell with 18 points.

Class B

Irene-Wakonda defeated Campbell County 68-62 in the second game of the Class B boys basketball tournament. Irene-Wakonda will face top-seed Langford, a 72-46 winner over Arlington, on Friday at 6 p.m. MDT.

Josh Nielson scored 25 points and Eric Anderson added 23 to pace Irene-Wakonda. Campbell County had four double-figure scorers, led by Sheldon Weisbeck with 24 points. Kyle Weisbeck scored 13, Collin Vander Wal had 11 and Ross Moser scored 10.
