INDIANAPOLIS - The Harney Little League All-Stars' run towards the Little League World Series was cut short Saturday in a 17-8 loss to Coon Rapids, Minn. at Stokely Field in the Midwest Regional championship game.
Rapid City held the lead 8-7 heading into the top of the fifth inning when things unraveled. A lead-off double by Anthony Mrosla, a single by Nathan LaBrant and three walks put the Minnesota team in the lead 9-8 and chased Harney pitcher Wayde Myers with the bases loaded. Cole Holzer came on and tried to hold the surge back, but by the time the dust had cleared Coon Rapids was up 13-8.
Coon Rapids' Dominique Reff hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning for the final margin.
Rapid City battled back after falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning but Coon Rapids went to reliever Tanner Lowe for the last two innings and he kept Harney from mounting another comeback. The Harney All-Stars had rallied from a 15-8 deficit to knock off Urbandale, Iowa in the semifinal game.
Bake Stone hit a solo home run for Harney.
Lowe got the win for Coon Rapids while Myers was tagged with the loss.
Coon Rapids advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn. They are the first team from Minnesota to make it to the Series since 1995. Harney was making a bid to become the first-ever South Dakota entry in the LLWS.
