PLAYOFFS: Sturgis to host first-round playoff game on Tuesday.

The South Dakota High School Activities Association released the first-round pairings for the 2008 State Football Playoffs on Friday.

In Class 11AA four local teams - No. 16 seed Rapid City Stevens (1-8 overall), No. 13 Douglas (4-4), No. 11 Rapid City Central (2-7) and No. 14 Spearfish (2-7) - will open the playoffs on the road. No. 7 Sturgis (5-4) is the lone West River Class 11AA team that will host a playoff game. The Scoopers, who claimed their first winning record since 1995 on Thursday with a win over Spearfish, will host No. 10 Aberdeen Central (5-4).

Four local teams will square off in Class 11A with Custer (4-4) at Belle Fourche (8-0) and Hot Springs (4-4) at St. Thomas More (5-3). Also Pine Ridge (3-5) will travel to Winner (7-1) and ToddCounty (4-4) is at Little Wound (6-2) in Class 11A.

Other local teams that will be in action include, Stanley County (4-4) at Bennett County (8-0) and Mobridge (5-3) at Red Cloud (6-2) in Class 11B.

In Class 9AA Newell (5-3) will travel to undefeated Lyman (8-0) and Gregory (5-3) is at White River (6-2).

Philip (5-3) will host a first-round 9A playoff game, entertaining Irene-Wakonda (4-4), while Sully Buttes (4-4) is at New Underwood (6-2).

In Class 9B, Jones County (2-6) is at Harding County (7-1) and Selby Area (3-5) travels to Dupree (5-3).

All first-round games are scheduled for Tuesday.

The top three highest power rated teams in each region automatically qualify for the playoffs in all classes. The next four highest power-rated teams, regardless of region, are selected at-large.

An at-large team finishing fifth or sixth in their region is moved to a new region. The at-large team will be seeded where their power points rank them within the region.

The first-place team in each region will play the fourth-place team and the second-place team will play the third-place team. The highest seeded team will host throughout the playoff.

An at-large team will not host a first-round game, but can host in subsequent rounds.
