RAPID CITY - Always wanted to be Rapunzel, Captain Jack Sparrow, Wild Bill Hickok, or The Mummy for a night? Black Hills Community Theatre has all the elements to help you look the part.

The theater's costume shop will be renting Halloween costumes through Oct. 31 from noon to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday (closed Sunday) at the Arts Resource Center, 1202 E. St. Francis Street.

The shop is open 15 hours per week year-round but extends its hours for the Halloween season. Costume shop manager Chris Lee designed most of the costumes for Black Hills Community Theatre productions.

"We have a lot of period costumes, from Egyptian to modern," she said. Some of the most popular costumes available include a black Elizabethan dress (sorry, it's already rented), various saloon-girl ensembles and a Bela Lugosi outfit for the aspiring Count Dracula.

Besides supporting a good cause, Lee said there are other advantages to renting a Halloween costume from the community theater.

"We can pull together the whole thing for someone; we're pretty creative," she said. "We give a lot of individual attention, and they get a one-of-a-kind look."

She said that this year, pirate costumes are especially sought after, probably as a result of the popularity of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.

Although most of the costumes for rent are for adult men and women, there are also some children's outfits available.

Lee encourages people to wear their own shoes, because the shop's supply of those is limited, but pretty much everything else can be found at the costume shop, including wigs, hats, masks, jewelry and props, such as fake swords, satchels, and purses. A wide variety of sizes are available.

The average price per costume ranges between $20 and $30, and customers can rent a complete costume, including props, or selected items to add to a costume they already own. A fee plus deposit is collected at the time of rental, and most costumes are due back three days after the event. If they are returned in the condition they were rented, the full deposit is refunded.

All proceeds go toward the operating costs of Black Hills Community Theatre. Last year, the group raised $3,000 from Halloween costume rentals, and Lee said this year's fundraising goal is $3,500.

If you're interested in renting a Halloween costume through Black Hills Community Theatre, Lee said the sooner the better.

"The best stuff always goes first," she said. "But if you are looking for something unique, this is definitely the place to come."
