The challenge of attending a U.S. Service Academy is always a momentous step in the life of any young person. When our country is at war, a nomination to one of the country's four service academies brings an even sharper focus on the patriotism and sense of service that comes with it.
Young South Dakotans between the ages of 17 and 23 have until Oct. 31 to apply to be part of the Class of 2012 at one of four service academies: Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York.
For a nomination, they must meet eligibility requirements in leadership, physical aptitude, scholarship and character and apply through the offices of one of South Dakota's congressional delegation.
Senator Tim Johnson said the strong level of interest shown each year by the state's finest young men and women always makes him proud.
"So many of our young people choose to pursue a role in our nation's defense, and I expect this year will be the same."
Senator John Thune said the academies draw talented applicants and he looks forward to nominating some of South Dakota's best and brightest to military careers. "The service academies provide excellent educational and leadership opportunities for a select number of young men and women each year," Thune said.
Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin encourages anyone interested to apply. "The U.S. Service Academies can offer invaluable experiences for a young person who not only wants to serve his or her country, but to grow and develop as an individual."
Johnson, Thune, and Herseth Sandlin will each compile separate lists and make final recommendations to the academies on the most qualified candidates by Jan. 31, 2008. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications to all three Congressional offices in order to better their chances of receiving a recommendation. The academies will make offers of appointment next spring.
