PIERRE - The state Health Department says an intestinal illness that comes from water contaminated by human or animal feces is on the rise in South Dakota. Cryptosporidiosis is caused by a microscopic parasite.
Outbreaks in other areas of the nation have been linked to swimming pools and water parks, but there have been no common exposure elements in South Dakota.
State disease specialist Lon Kightlinger says 108 cases have been confirmed in South Dakota so far this year compared to the five-year median of 31 cases.
He says most of the cases have been east of the Missouri River, and about 60 percent of victims were younger than 15.
