PIERRE - The production of wind power in South Dakota will more than quadruple by the end of the year, from the current 44 megawatts to more than 185 megawatts.
The state Economic Development Office said much of the increase will come from completion of a wind farm that straddles McPherson County in South Dakota and Dickey and McIntosh counties in North Dakota.
Acciona Energy of Spain is erecting 120 turbines in that area. Fifty-nine of them will be in South Dakota.
South Dakota's largest wind farm is currently located near Highmore.
Another large wind farm is being built in Brookings County and extends into Minnesota, and a wind farm is scheduled to be built next year near Wessington Springs.
